Handmade Cork Chair
Seeing what creative professionals come up with from discarded materials has always been fascinating to me. Take for instance this chair made by Quartertwenty, a Portland-based design studio. Where do you think the pieces first got their start? If you guessed from within aluminum baseball bats, you would be right. This chair is made of cork discs from the inside of old aluminum baseball bats collected from a local secondhand sporting goods store in Portland, Oregon.
Once collected, cleaned and formed, these discs are threaded onto aluminum rods and woven into a surface using lasercut steel sides to shape the chair. At the end of this lengthy and meticulous process, you get a well-designed and environmentally-friendly furniture piece. Please note that these cork chairs are custom made pieces, so you’ll have to speak with Matthew Bietz, founder ofQuartertwenty, and his team to get details on sizes and pricing. (The size shown is 36″ L x 24″ W x 30″ H with a seat height of 16″.)
